Life Story
Scripture: “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” Psalm 139:16
Devotion:
I am a preparer and planner when it comes to special events, and the month of June is filled with many things to celebrate with my family and friends, birthdays, anniversaries, and of course, Father’s Day. So, in my somewhat overzealous nature, I started thinking about the ‘perfect’ gifts for some of these occasions, specifically Father’s Day. Now, I am not sure if you have a father or someone in your life that is impossible to buy for, but that would be the definition of my dad. He has everything, and what he wants he gets himself; therefore, making it impossible to get him anything.
While looking through various ideas online, I came across a website that will create a book for you based on some very basic information you provide. I did a little more research to see exactly what this outfit was and what all it entailed (mainly checking to see if it was a scam… LOL), and I found the process to be simple, reviews to be glowing, and the overall process fairly simple. So, I decided to start the process of having this book written. Long story short, I have already received the digital copy, and it was worth every penny.
In embarking upon this process, it got me thinking about ‘my book’. What if someone who knows almost everything about me, or even those who know just little, were to write a book about me? What would it say? Would it be a story of hope? Love? Joy? Forgiveness? Or would it be a story of darkness? Gloom? Despair? Hopelessness? Would it reflect a life lived in the image of Jesus? Or would it leave a reader with a sense of emptiness and no purpose?
Heavy stuff, right? But seriously, have you ever thought what your story would be like if someone wrote a book about you? Psalm 139:16 says that God has already written our book, every page, every word, every detail… wouldn’t you like to get your hands on that book? I wonder how many edits He has had to make to mine? I am sure there are some chapters that He would have loved to have left out when my story began to take a turn in a direction He had written differently in the beginning, but the next chapters are ones of hope, forgiveness and grace, which I pray He was pleased to write (or at least I hope so).
As you move through this week, I encourage you to reflect on what your book would look like and would it be something you would want others to read. Would your book reflect the love and hope found in Jesus Christ? Would it encourage others to seek God?
I don’t know what my final story will be, but I pray the remaining chapter of my life only reflect the grace, forgiveness, love, peace, joy, hope, and security I have found in my walk with God daily, and when my time comes, it will be a read that God will be proud of and I hear the title as it is read “The life of a good and faithful servant”.
“The master said, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ (Matthew 25:23)
Reflection: What will your book say? Does it have a happy ending?
