Staying in the Eye of the Storm
Psalm 46:1–3 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. SELAH
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus
Do you ever have a moment where you just wish the world would stop so you can breathe and get out of the storm of life you are being given?
I have those often lately as I feel like my life is a whirlwind, much like a tornado or hurricane… but have you ever stopped to think about the safest place in those types of storms? I didn’t until a dear friend reminded me today… it is in the eye of the storm. The eye is the safest place because you are surrounded by the turmoil around you, but you are protected.
As Christians, and myself specifically, I think that sometimes I can tackle what is happening around me… life, death, sickness, illness, and whatever else life wants to throw at me. I step out into the surrounding areas outside the eye… and guess what? Not so good for me… I get hit by whatever is being whirled my way in the midst of the storm.
No matter what storm you may be going through, keep in the eye of the storm where God WILL protect you. As Psalm 46:1-3 states… HE is our refuge… HE created the eye of a storm, so why do we try and step out of it?
I also want to point out that in this scripture; there is the word SELAH. Depending on translation, it can have different meanings, but the Greek translation it is a ‘pause’. I don’t think it is ironic that this comes after talking about the world pretty much crashing in… but rather a ‘pause’ to remind us of even when everything seems to be going wrong, life is not going as planned, we are in a STORM… get in the eye and ‘pause’. Your pause may be different at different times, but thank HIM for protection, pray with HIM, spend time with HIM, but don’t step out of the eye.
In moments in the eye of the storm, HE is not only our refuge, but HE is our peace (Philippians 4:7). The world may be swirling all around us, but in the eye of the storm, there is peace… the peace that only HE can bring. It is a peace that is beyond our understanding; peace that surpasses our ability to comprehend; and yet, it is there. It is always there… we just step outside the eye of the storm into the chaos.
Storms are given for a reason, and sometimes, it is just to bring us back to HIM and get us back into the eye of protection and an opportunity to experience HIS peace. And have you ever noticed that sometimes after those storms you can see the most beautiful rainbows? Those are HIS promises…stay in the eye of the storm and something beautiful will come.
May your rainbows and colors from HIM be revealed and the storm clouds a distance memory.
